Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris said that Shreyas Iyer had the qualities to become a potential leader for India.
Iyer was elevated to vice-captain role for the West Indies ODIs after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the first two games due to a knee injury. Iyer has been consistent with his performance in the series with scores of 54 and 63.
My phone has been buzzing with my comments: Scott Styris
During one of his television shows, Styris had deemed Iyer to be India’s future captain based on his leadership skills. The 27-year-old has led Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL but never got the opportunity with the Indian team.
“I can tell you one thing, I have got my own manual Google alerts. My phone has been buzzing with my comments on Shreyas Iyer a couple of days ago where I said he is a future captain for India,” Styris said on Sports 18.
“It’s performances like this that not only will show his leadership qualities, but I also think will show his leadership in the group. He may not be captain but he has the ability to be a real leader through not only his actions but the way that he carries himself in a team environment as well,” he added.
Shreyas Iyer played a sensational innings: Scott Styris
Iyer scored 63 off 71 balls in India’s chase of 312 in the second ODI against the West Indies. He played the role of an anchor in his 99-run stand with wicketkeeper Sanju Samson (54) for the fourth wicket. Iyer didn’t go after the big shots except for the one against Kyle Mayers, dispatching over the long-off stands for a six.
Before Iyer could go along in his alliance with Samson, West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph pinned the batter for leg before wicket in front.
“That was a sensational innings. I think he will be disappointed he didn’t go on and make it a bigger number. But I think just exactly what India needed. As I said, they were a little bit slow to start with but he got the momentum going with Sanju Samson,” Styris mentioned.
Iyer is hopeful to score a century in the final ODI against Nicholas Pooran and his men on Wednesday at Queen’s Park Oval.
