The second ODI was not the day for Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan to continue his brilliant form with the bat. Set to chase 312 to win in Trinidad, India lost their captain early in the piece. Dhawan who scored 97 in the first ODI fell to a brilliant diving catch taken by Kyle Mayers on the third man boundary off the bowling of Romario Shepherd.

West Indies scored 311 with the bat with Shai Hope scoring a115 in his 100th ODI. He opened the batting along with Mayers and both of them added a 65-run stand for the first wicket. Windies then lost two quick wickets Shamarh Brooks (35) and Brandon King as India fought back. Nicholas Pooran (77) then added a 117-run stand to help his team get close to 300. Eventually, the hosts ended with 311/6.

India had a tough task of chasing a big total to win the series. However, they lost Dhawan for just 13. It was the 11th over of the Indian innings when Shepherd bowled a well-directed bouncer that the southpaw tried to upper-cut to the third-man boundary but instead found Mayers on the way.

The last 100-odd runs were scored by Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel bringing out his potential with the bat by scoring his maiden ODI fifty. He scored an unbeaten 64 off just 35 balls with three fours and five sixes to take India over the line by two wickets with two balls to spare. Patel was also chosen as the Man of the Match for his all-round exploits in the second ODI. He took 1 /40 before scoring his fifty with the bat.

“I think this is a special one. It came at a crucial time and also helped the team to win the series. We have done the same in the IPL. We just needed to remain calm and keep the intensity up. I was playing an ODI after close to 5 years. I would want to continue performing like this for my team” said Patel during his performance.

The two-wicket win helped India to register their 12th consecutive ODI series win against West Indies surpassing Pakistan’s record of 11 consecutive ODI series wins against Zimbabwe.
