Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar opined Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant needs to fire with the bat ahead of their game against Punjab Kings on Wednesday (April 20) in Mumbai. Delhi Capitals have suffered three losses in their last four matches after kicking off their IPL 2022 campaign with a stunning win over five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians.
The Rishabh Pant & co is presently placed in the eighth position with four points from five games and they are just above Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2022 points table.
Rishabh Pant’s performance in IPL 2022 so far
Pant aggregates 143 runs in five innings at an average of 36 and strikes at 146.94 in IPL 2022 so far, the wicketkeeper-batter is yet to surpass a 50-plus score this season with his best being 43 against Gujarat Titans.
Pant scored 17-ball 34 in his last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before he could surge ahead in the innings and take the team past the finishing line, the DC skipper was dismissed by a one-handed stunning catch from Virat Kohli.
Rishabh Pant hasn’t fired completely: Sanjay Manjrekar
Manjrekar pointed out that Pant needs to produce his best in the middle-order as Delhi Capitals are highly reliant on openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner. The former Indian player also mentioned that Lalit Yadav, who was the match-winner for DC against MI, cannot be considered a pure batter.
“Rishabh Pant hasn’t fired completely and the same is the case with Powell’s form. Lalit Yadav bats and bowls but we cannot look at him as a pure batter. They need some help down the order and this is why Pant finding form is very important for them,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
“Both Prithvi Shaw and David Warner are high-risk players and there might be a problem if they lose a couple of early wickets,” he added.
The match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings has been shifted from the MCA stadium in Pune to the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai following the COVID-19 outburst in the Delhi camp.
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh and four other non-playing members of the Delhi Capitals contracted the COVID-19 virus. Physiotherapist Patrick Farhat was the first member to test positive on April 15 and sports massage therapist Chetan Kumar caught the infection on April 16.
