Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowler Piyush Chawla expressed concerns over Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson’s batting form in IPL 2022.

SRH will be desperate to see Williamson amongst scoring runs as the New Zealand star batter has managed 195 runs in nine innings with just one half-century this season.

Kane Williamson has to work on his batting: Piyush Chawla

Williamson scored 47 in 37 balls against Chennai Super Kings in their last match. But, Chawla feels SRH depends a lot on Williamson and it is high time for the skipper to deliver big innings.

“Look, it’s a massive concern. If we talk of Kane Williamson, he is a player around whom the entire batting unit revolves. However, it hasn’t happened yet. Hence, in case of chasing big scores, SRH faces trouble. Williamson has to work on his batting if SRH has to go the distance,” Chawla told ESPNCricinfo.

Better to avoid changing Kane Williamson’s batting position: Piyush Chawla

Williamson is seen opening the innings with youngster Abhishek Sharma. The SRH captain has taken more time to settle at the crease than he would while batting at the No.3 position. Williamson has played 196 balls to nearly score run-a-ball this season with a below-par average of 24.38.

When Chawla was asked about a change in the SRH skipper’s batting position, the leg-spinner disagreed as it would disturb the team’s batting line-up.

“This point came up when Suneisers lost at the start, but the discussion stopped when they began winning. However, you don’t want to disturb the combination, and it is better to avoid changing Williamson’s position and disrupting any other batter’s slot who is scoring runs,” Chawla said.

“It’s better to leave things as they are because his technique is excellent. It takes one match to gain rhythm, and Brabourne Stadium’s wicket is good. He may enjoy batting there and we will get to see a big score,” he added.

SRH will take on Delhi Capitals on Thursday (May 5) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
