GT v LSG: Match Preview.

Gujarat Titans, the new IPL 2022 franchise will play its opening game against another new entrant Lucknow Super Giants on March 28. The Gujarat franchise’s most notable acquisition for their maiden IPL season was that of Afghanistan leg spinner Rashid Khan, arguably the best T20I bowler in the world, who has left Sunrisers Hyderabad to spearhead this Gujarat Titans bowling attack, which also includes Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson.

On the other hand, England’s white-ball specialist opener Jason Roy’s withdrawal from the IPL 2022 saw the Gujarat Titans move to bring in another Afghanistan star in Rahmanullah Gurbaz as his replacement, whilst the likes of all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia add balance to the side.

Lucknow Super Giants are led in their opening season by Indian international batter and former Punjab Kings star KL Rahul, with pacer Avesh Khan, and all-rounders Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya ensuring a strong Indian core to this side.

Arguably the most exciting factor about Lucknow Super Giants will be the top-order partnership between KL Rahul and former IPL winner Proteas keeper Quinton de Kock, although the South African’s availability for the opening match is uncertain, whilst an injury to fast bowler Mark Wood has seen the Lucknow Super Giants draft in Australian pacer Andrew Tye as a replacement.

An intriguing clash lies ahead between these two brand new franchises who will each be desperate to put their own stamp on the competition. The loss of Jason Roy has no doubt hit Gujarat Titans’ batting plans drawn up before the mega auction, however, their bowling attack led by the outstanding Rashid Khan looks strong.

However, they may well have met their match in KL Rahul, who is expected to lead this Lucknow Super Giants team very strong and although they are expecting to be missing a couple of important overseas players, the shrewd move is to back them to gain their first-ever IPL victory.

Probable Lucknow Super Giants XI: KL Rahul (Captain), Quinton De Kock (wicketkeeper), Evin Lewis, Manish Pandey, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, Dushmantha Chameera, Andrew Tye, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi

Probable Gujarat Titans XI: Shubman Gill, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper), Vijay Shankar, David Miller, Abhinav Sadarangani, Hardik Pandya (captain), Rahul Tewatia, R Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson.
