West Indies’ latest sensation, all-rounder Rovman Powell, bagged himself a huge contract with the IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals (DC), in the IPL 2022 mega auction. He will be playing in the league for the first time and is keen to make an impact.

Notably, he will also be in the company of the man he grew up watching, former Aussie legend and current DC head coach, Ricky Ponting. Powell is excited to be playing under Ponting and is hoping to pick his brain.

As a child I watched Ricky Ponting bat a lot. We know the type of leader he was when he captained the Australian team and I think he is the same type of leader as a coach as well. He is really good and hopefully, I can learn a thing or two from him,” Powell was quoted as saying after the first training session with the franchise on Wednesday.

Powell recently played against India in the T20I series where he made waves with his batting. The explosive nature of his batsmanship caught everyone’s attention, including that of the DC captain, Rishabh Pant.

It’s been very good to be in the Delhi camp. I have heard a lot of good things about this franchise. The players have welcomed me with open arms. I had a chat with Rishabh during the T20 series in Kolkata as well. He told me that he is excited to have me in the team,” Powell added.

Ahead of the auction, DC had retained Pant as the captain, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje. The latter’s participation is still unconfirmed but the franchise will be hoping that he recovers from his injury in time for the season.
