After enduring a forgettable season in 2020, Chennai Super Kings made a roaring comeback in the 2021 edition of the tournament. The Men in Yellow was nothing short of outstanding in both the legs of the tournament. They won 9 matches out of 14 and finished the league stage at number two position on the points table. CSK continued their impressive run in knockouts and went on to register their fourth IPL title after beating Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals.

Sadly, most of their veteran players won’t be playing for the franchise from the next edition onwards. Ahead of the Mega-Auctions, each team can only retain four players in their squad. Chennai Super Kings have picked MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali as their four retentions. The rest of the players have gone back into the auction pool.

The Men in Yellow will once again be forming a new squad around these four players. With MS Dhoni at the helm, you expect the team to make some great signings at auctions. In this article, we have predicted five players that CSK can target at the mega auction

Trent Boult

CSK dearly missed a bowler who could fast and has the ability to bowl in both powerplay and the death overs. They tried Lungi Ngidi but he didn’t fare too well with the ball. Trent Boult has bowled exceedingly well for Mumbai Indians in the last two editions of the tournament. In his first season with the franchise, he picked the second most number of wickets for them.

Boult continued his great run in the India leg of the IPL 2021. Though, he lost his accuracy in the second leg of the tournament. Boult is currently one of the best fast bowlers in the world and CSK are likely to spend a hefty sum of money for the New Zealand pacer.

Sam Curran

With the teams allowed only four players to retain, Chennai Super Kings, unfortunately, had to release Sam Curran for the next edition. MS Dhoni made great use of the England seamer in IPL 2020. He was, in fact, one of the few bright spots for the team during the tournament.

Sam Curran was pretty effective with the ball in the India leg of the tournament as well. He picked 9 wickets in 9 matches with the ball but didn’t get a lot of opportunities with the ball. Sam Curran is one of the greatest assets in T20 cricket and CSK would be wanting to bring him back into the side.

Ishan Kishan

One of the integral cogs in Chennai Super Kings, Faf du Plessis is no more part of the successful franchise. He was outstanding last year with the bat but CSK decided to let him go ahead of the next season. With age not on his side, CSK might not want to get him back into the set-up and would look for another opener.

Ishan Kishan is someone who can complement Ruturaj Gaikwad really well. The duo can form a great opening pair for CSK for the years to come. The right-left combination would keep the team in good stead. Given that Gaikwad takes some time before switching gears, Ishan Kishan can be a great company to have. He is someone who takes the attacking route right from the onset of his innings.

Mumbai Indians, unfortunately, had to release Ishan Kishan for the next edition and Chennai Super Kings can target him at the auctions. Ishan Kishan has 1452 runs in 61 matches in IPL at an average of 28.47.

Rahul Chahar

Chennai Super Kings had to rely on Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali in the spin department. Both are pretty effective with the ball but CSK missed variety in their spin attack. To bolster the spin attack, they might bring in a leg-spinner in Rahul Chahar.

He had been an integral cog in MI’S bowling attack before the franchise released him this year. He will find himself back in the auction pool ahead of the next edition of the tournament. Chahar bowled beautifully in the middle overs for MI during the India leg of the tournament.

He was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disastrous outing in the first half of IPL 2021. His exceptional performances also helped him find a place in India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Chennai Super Kings will have an eye on him in the auctions.

Rahul Chahar has 43 wickets in 42 matches in IPL at an average of 25.97.

Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur’s presence gives a balance to a team. He provides the option of a sixth bowler and also adds depth to the batting unit. CSK used him wisely in the middle-overs and also in the death overs as well. Whenever CSK has been in trouble, Thakur, more often than not, proved to be the go-to bowler for them.

He played all 16 matches for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021 and picked 21 wickets at an average of 25.09. It was his best season till now in the tournament. His importance in a T20 team is unparalleled and CSK would be desperate to get him back into the squad. So far in his IPL career, Shardul Thakur has managed to pick 67 wickets in 61 matches at an average of 27.86.
