IPL 2022 Auction: Harbhajan Singh Names Player That Punjab Kings Should Target For Captaincy Role

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh suggested some names for IPL team Punjab Kings to go for a captaincy material in the IPL 2022 auction.
Karnataka batter KL Rahul was appointed Punjab’s captain in 2020 but was released by the franchise in the retention window after he was in close ties to join a new IPL team.
KL Rahul named captain of Lucknow Super Giants
Rahul was one of the picks of the Sanjiv Goenka owned Lucknow Super Giants and was also named the captain of the team.
After just four seasons, Rahul is currently the leading run-scorer of the Punjab franchise with 2548 runs from 55 innings.
Harbhajan, who played 163 IPL games for Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, feels Punjab can target middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer as their captain.
Iyer Iyer is the reason behind Delhi Capitals resurgence after he took over the captaincy duties from Gautam Gambhir in IPL 2018.
In IPL 2019, the Delhi franchise qualified for the playoffs after a hiatus of seven years and the next year they made their maiden appearance in a final, where they lost to Mumbai Indians.
Iyer can not only give any team the option of a middle-order batter but also could become a potential candidate for the leadership role.
Punjab Kings have an opportunity to pick Shreyas Iyer for long-term captaincy
Harbhajan said if the Punjab outfit is not successful in getting Iyer in their team, the team should look to Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan and England captain Eoin Morgan as alternatives for captaincy roles.
“Punjab have got an opportunity to pick someone like Shreyas for long-term captaincy and build a strong team around him. He’s young and Mohali’s pitch will suit him well… and the upcoming IPL edition is in Mumbai where Shreyas has played plenty of cricket. He also has the experience of leading an IPL side,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.
“But if they don’t manage to buy Shreyas Iyer, they can go for Shikhar Dhawan or Eoin Morgan. My previous IPL team (KKR) was headed by Morgan and he’s a great captain with a World Cup to his name,” he further added.
Punjab Kings have retained opening batter Mayank Agarwal and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh for IPL 2022 season.
