Bhutan cricketer Mikyo Dorji said that it was a “big deal” for his country after he registered his name in the IPL 2022 auction.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is just a couple of weeks away to see one of the greatest events in the history of IPL.

A total of 1214 players have signed up their names for the IPL 2022 auction which includes 270 capped players, 312 uncapped players and 41 players from the associate teams.

The IPL 2022 auction won’t have the regular eight teams featuring but this time it will be 10 after the BCCI added two new teams (Lucknow and Ahmedabad) for the next edition.

Playing in the IPL is an ultimate dream for me: Mikyo Dorji

Mikyo Dorji, who has played one T20I match for Bhutan against Nepal, mentioned the difficulties in getting picked for the IPL auction. The 22-year-old Bhutan batter is not hoping to get shortlisted in the main list of the auction but is happy to see someone from Bhutan register for the cash-rich league.

Playing in the IPL is an ultimate dream for me. People saw that there was one player in the auction list from Bhutan and my friends started calling me. But they don’t know (laughs) that this is just the initial round, and the names are going to be shortlisted further.

“If I am honest to myself, my name will not be there in the main list after it is trimmed. Anyways, just registering is a big deal for Bhutan,” Dorji told the New Indian Express.

If any franchise picks a player from Bhutan, it will help a great deal here: Mikyo Dorji

Dorji also talked about how the mindset of people in Bhutan is changing after one player managed to play for ISL club Kerala Blasters. The Bhutan player is hopeful for youngsters to take up sports as a career option with more opportunities coming in franchise cricket.

For players like me, more than anything, I missed international cricket, where I could have learned further and developed,” said Dorji.

“In the future, and I hope so, if any franchise picks a player from Bhutan, it will help a great deal here. For example, Bhutan footballer Chencho Gyeltshen plays in the Indian Super League, it has helped a lot.

“People and parents alike have started to realise that one can make good money and career out of such sports too. The same thing can happen in cricket too if a player from Bhutan is in the IPL,” added Dorji.

The IPL 2022 auction will take place on February 12 & 13 in Bengaluru as 49 players have set their base price under the category of INR 2 crore.
