Young Hyderabad batter N Tilak Varma was one of the few lucky 19-year-old cricketers, who were bought in the recently held IPL 2022 mega auction. The left-handed batter will play for the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming IPL 2022 edition after being bought for INR 1.70 crores on the second day of the auction.
Not only was he anxious about getting sold in the auction, but his family and friends back home were also eager to know his fate. With each passing raise of the paddle in the auction room at Bengaluru’s ITC Gardenia hotel, also raised the decibel levels around Varma, who was surrounded by a group of ebullient friends, cheering for him with great passion in Cuttack, where he is currently with Hyderabad Ranji Trophy team.
Varma’s name inflicted a bidding war between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians before the latter claimed him for 8.5 times his base price of INR 20 lakh.

Tilak Varma Hopes To Justify “Crorepati” Tag
Tilak Varma hails from Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad and in an interview with PTI, credited his coach Salam Bayash for his success. Varma’s father Namboori Nagaraju is an electrician and could hardly afford to send Varma to a cricket academy and buy him the gears, but Salam “took care of his expenses”.

“Mere baarein mein bhale hi na likho, but coach sir ka zaroor mention karna (It’s okay not to write about me but definitely do highlight Salam sir). He bought me the cricketing gears and took care of most of the expenses (at Legala Cricket Academy). So it’s all because of him and my family’s support I’m here,” he told PTI.
Varma said that he was confident of playing in the IPL and would hope to justify his price tag if given an opportunity to play for Mumbai Indians.
“I was confident of playing IPL but never expected to get this price-tag. It’s a dream come true for me to play with a team I always loved. It will give me a perfect opportunity to learn and hone my skills, playing alongside the greats,” he added.
He was in good form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy domestic one-dayers, scoring 180 runs in five matches and taking four wickets. He then impressed everyone in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, compiling 215 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 147.26.
