The IPL 2022 has seen a lot of umpiring howlers that changed the course of the game.
IPL 2022 and umpiring howlers a major loss for cricket
Lucknow Super Giants all-rounder Marcus Stoinis expressed his frustration for not being awarded wide off Josh Hazlewood in the penultimate over of the chase. As a result, Stoinis lost his focus and wicket as well before LSG lost by 18 runs.
Delhi Capitals dugout was irked by on field umpires not calling an Obed McCoy over waist full toss to Rovman Powell.
Powell was on an daunting task of hitting six sixes to win the game, he already had clobbered three of the first three deliveries. But the no-ball controversy sparked protests from the Capitals dugout with skipper Rishabh Pant asking the batters to come back.
However, Powell continued to play and there was no change in the umpire’s decision. The West Indies all-rounder could manage to score just two runs in the last three deliveries.
In the latest match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, RR captain Sanju Samson was livid with Prasidh Krishna’s two deliveries being called wide balls even though the batter shuffled across the crease.
Players should have some avenues towards rectifying those mistakes: Daniel Vettori stress on DRS intervention
Vettori, who played as well as coached for RCB previously in the IPL, called for reviews on wide and no-ball decisions.
“I don’t think there was any thought of it actually being out. Absolutely [players should be allowed to review wides]. The players should be able to decide in such crucial matters,” Vettori told ESPNCricinfo.
“Today it is a little bit different where it always looked like KKR are going to win. But we have sat here so many times and seen decisions go against bowlers that are so close and the umpire has got it wrong. So therefore the players should have some avenues towards rectifying those mistakes.
“That’s why DRS was brought in: to rectify mistakes. I would like to see that happen. And players are very good judges of that. They get it right more often than not,” he added.
KKR eventually won by seven wickets to keep their IPL 2022 campaign alive while RR suffered a second straight defeat but retained their third position in the points table.
