Chennai Super Kings pace bowler Deepak Chahar’s return to IPL 2022 is doubtful after he suffered a back injury during his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo,  the gravity of the injury remains to be ascertained and the franchise is yet to receive an official report from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or NCA authorities regarding the seriousness of the injury.

Earlier reports had suggested that the bowling all-rounder could join CSK in the middle of April but the recent developments will add another shock for the franchise, which is struggling to find success this season and lost its first four matches.

Chahar has been at NCA for more than a month and with the doubts creeping over his recovery, the BCCI would want him to be fit in order to be available for the T20 World Cup 2021 in Australia later in the October-November period.

Chahar has played 58 IPL matches for CSK between 2018-and 2021, he claimed 58 wickets at an economy rate of 7.70 for the four-time IPL champions. During the IPL 2022 auction, Chahar was very reluctant to play for any other franchise other than CSK, the 29-year-old had admitted to Star Sports that he felt nervous about his bidding process when it crossed the 13 crore mark.

CSK are struggling to find the momentum to get wickets in the early overs in Chahar’s absence with inexperienced bowler Mukesh Choudhary finding it difficult to fill the shoes of the senior pacer. CSK also lacks depth in bowling as they don’t have a genuine leg-spinner in their squad.

The Ravindra Jadeja-led side will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday (April 12) at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
