IPL 2022 Final: Had Gujarat Titans Lost One More Wicket At That Time Then They Would Have Been In Trouble – Virender Sehwag

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag said Gujarat Titans’ batting order might have collapsed had they lost one more wicket in the early overs of their chase in the IPL 2022 final.

The Titans outsmarted Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in front of a raucous home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 29).

Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance leads Gujarat Titans to IPL 2022 final

Skipper Hardik led from the front in the important clash of the tournament and starred with both bat and ball. Hardik claimed three wickets for 17 runs from four overs with the dismissals of Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer.

Barring Buttler (39) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (22), no other batter managed to score above 20 as the Royals posted a meagre score of 130 in the first innings.

Pace bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult gave them hopes with early wickets of Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade in the powerplay.

Titans skipper Hardik and opener Shubman Gill put a calm and clinical 63-run stand for the third wicket to overcome the threat imposed by the Royals at the halfway mark.

Ashwin, who was held by Samson to bowl the left-handers later in the innings, came to bowl in the 12th over.

Hardik decided to open his hands against the off-spinner with a four and a six in successive balls as Ashwin conceded 15 runs in his first over.

Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Hardik on 34 to end the partnership between him and Gill. David Miller just continued from where Hardik had left.

Miller whacked Ashwin for a six over mid-wicket before hammering Prasidh for a couple of boundaries.

Gill hit the winning shot – a six off Obed McCoy over square leg- to finish the game with 11 balls to spare and etched Gujarat Titans’ name on the studded IPL trophy.

Hardik Pandya’s innings was crucial in Gujarat Titans’ chase: Virender Sehwag

Sehwag appreciated Hardik’s innings in the middle elsewhere Titans could have struggled against a determined Royals bowling attack.

GT did not score much in the first 8-9 overs, had they lost another wicket at that time, then they would have been in trouble,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“But Hardik Pandya’s innings was crucial, may seem small on paper, but those 34 runs were very important. Everything fell in place for GT across all three departments,” he added.
