IPL 2022: Gautam Gambhir Joins Lucknow Franchise As Mentor
The new addition to IPL, Lucknow, continues roping in former pros for the coaching roles in the franchise. The latest to join is former Indian batsman, Gautam Gambhir, who will play the role of a mentor in the team.
Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of RPSG Group which owns the Lucknow franchise, confirmed the news to Cricbuzz on December 18, Saturday. “Yes, we have taken him,” Goenka said to Cricbuzz.
Gambhir has been part of the IPL since its inception. He is a two-time IPL winning captain with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Following the completion of his playing days, Gambhir joined Star Sports as an IPL analyst and was a regular on the network’s shows.
Gautam Gambhir’s addition comes after Andy Flower’s appointment
The BCCI allowed Goenka to confirm the news of the appointment of Andy Flower as the head coach. There are a few more complications but Goenka managed to relay the information on Friday.
“As a player and a coach Andy has left an indelible mark in the history of cricket. We respect his professionalism and hope he will work with our vision and add value to our team,” Goenka said.
The move was anticipated much before due to the rumors that KL Rahul will also be joining the franchise. Because of a great working relationship between Rahul and Flower, Lucknow saw it fit to bring the former Zimbabwean captain in.
“I am incredibly excited to be joining the new Lucknow franchise and I am very grateful for the opportunity. Since my very first tour to India in 1993, I have always loved touring, playing, and coaching in India.”
“The passion for cricket in India is unrivalled and it is a real privilege to lead an IPL franchise and I am looking forward to working closely with Dr. Goenka and the Lucknow team.
“I will relish the challenge to build something meaningful and successful with the Lucknow franchise, I am looking forward to meeting the management and staff when I visit Uttar Pradesh in the New Year,” Flower said.
The new franchises are allowed to have three signings before heading into the IPL 2022 meg auction.
