Australian pacer Pat Cummins has opined on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) naming Shreyas Iyer as their captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) edition. Cummins will be playing for the IPL 2021 finalists, as he was bought back by the Shahrukh Khan co-owned franchise for INR 7.50 crores.
Shreyas Iyer was bought at the IPL 2022 auction by KKR for INR 12.25 crores and was amongst the 20 other players signed by KKR. As Eoin Morgan was released after the IPL 2021, KKW was in need of a new captain and despite having the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Pat Cummins as options, named Iyer as the new skipper of the franchise.
During the pre-match virtual conference for the third Test against Pakistan in Lahore, Cummins opined on Iyer becoming the KKR captain and sharing a dressing room with him during the 2017 IPL season for Delhi (Daredevils).
“Shreyas, I played with at Delhi(Daredevils), we got on really well. He’s seem like a very calm guy and seems in form at the moment. I’m so excited to go over there, I have some close friends I will be playing alongside, can’t wait,” he said.
I Am Really Eager And Just Waiting- Shreyas Iyer On Meeting KKR Co-Owner Shahrukh Khan
Meanwhile, on the other hand, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer spoke about the franchise co-owner and Bollywood megastar Shahrukh Khan. Speaking during a press conference, Shreyas Iyer said that he’s looking forward to meeting co-owner Shah Rukh Khan as he has always admired him and he has been his motivating factor.
“I haven’t interacted with (Shah Rukh Khan). I am really looking forward to that moment because he has always been one of the motivating factors to me especially. And also whenever he is there present at the stadium, the support that he offers to the team is simply outstanding to see it from outside. Yeah, I am really eager and just waiting, counting on the time…whenever I’ll get that opportunity to meet him, I’ll go a bit crazy I feel,” Shreyas Iyer said.
Iyer had captained the Delhi Capitals (DC) from IPL 2019 onwards, after taking over from Gautam Gambhir. He then led the franchise into their very first Indian Premier League final in the IPL 2020 edition where they lost out to Mumbai Indians.
Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their IPL 2022 campaign against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the tournament opener on March 26.
