What ought not to be missed in the 2022 IPL is the heart-beating, instinctive feast that Umran Malik is against anybody. Last week, Malik’s stunning speed hit Hardik Pandya on the helmet, destroyed the stumps of Shreyas Iyer, and put Andrea Russell on the derrieres.

And against PBKS on Sunday, in the last over he bowled without giving away a single run, taking three wickets in four balls, and also on the brink of a hattrick.

In his initial four matches, this season – three wickets for 146 runs in 14 overs – Malik went wild with a craze – prior to tracking down his radar against KKR. In an exclusive chat with TOI, he talks about making batters uncomfortable with his pace and how is it playing under the captaincy of Kane Williamson

Want To Keep The Batsman On The Backfoot: Umran Malik

Umran Malik’s trade with Shreyas Iyer has become one of those sections of the game that isolates from the scoreboard, makes all the other things undetectable, and transforms into the most adequate cricket contest, stripped even in his most splendid new outfit.

On being asked about how he made Shreyas Iyer uncomfortable with his pace and struck Hardik Pandya on the helmet and how most batsmen are backing away from the stumps to you…Umran answered:

It’s good for me ki woh mere ko peeche khel rahe hain (batsmen are backing away from the stumps). My aim would be to not let them hit me from there. I want to keep them on the back foot.

SRH has been sensational since losing its first two games against RR and LSG. They have now won 4 on the trot. Speaking on his views about playing under captain Kane Williamson, Umran replies:

He’s a very good captain. Even as a bowler, if you get hit for a four or six, he’ll ask you, ‘Are you happy?’ If the captain backs you like that, there’s nothing else that a bowler wants. It boosts you and enables you to come back with a bang.

Umran will meet with his match one of these evenings in the IPL, but it is not predicted what will shape his future. Not only in T20 but also in longer formats, especially in international cricket. Where Malik’s pace favors others. As for the variations and sense of the game, the experience will be his best teacher.

SRH will face RCB in their next game, where Umran will be up against some of the best in the world like Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell.
