Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Mohit Burman has hinted at the possibility of a senior player taking over as the captain of the franchise, meaning that Shikhar Dhawan leads the race ahead of Karnataka batter, Mayank Agarwal.

It was recently reported that Dhawan could take over as he has prior experience having captained Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before. However, even Agarwal could also be considered for the role as he was one of their retained players of the mega auction.

I think it’s a big advantage to have a senior player who has played with you before to lead the team. He understands the thinking of the coach. He has a good rapport with the coaches and the idea is to give him a strong bunch of players who fill up all the positions,” Burman told News9 Sports.

In addition, Burman also revealed that the auction strategy was quite simple and they wanted to ensure that the squad is balanced and can have players who can hold their own during pressure situations.

Our strategy was to put very strong lieutenants in every position so it would be much easier for the captain to not only lead but be a team player. Therefore, I wanted to give an equal playing side which will come across as a strong team than to have one strong leader,” Burman added.

PBKS shelled out INR 8.25 crores for Dhawan at the auction, meaning that they were willing to spend so much in order to have him captain the team. Apart from Agarwal, bowler Arshdeep Singh was retained by the franchise.
