Former Indian opener, Aakash Chopra has shown signs of concern for Mayank Agarwal and his leadership for Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the inception of IPL 2022.

Mayank Agarwal is one of only two players retained by Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 mega-auction, one of which is Arshdeep Singh. Just after the auction, he also was made captain of the 2014 finalists.

Chopra believes that Agarwal’s appointment after the auction means the franchise wasn’t completely prepared.

“The Punjab Kings have a history of underachievement. Can Mayank Agarwal help them turn their luck around? It’s a unique task because he was named captain after the auction was completed and everyone had returned home. There is a team that has been assembled and a captain has been named; yet, this is hardly an ideal situation.”

After the experienced opener was acquired at the auction, Shikhar Dhawan was regarded as one of the hot contenders to take over as captain of the Punjab Kings. The franchise, on the other hand, chose Agarwal, apparently because of the long-term potential.

Mayank Agarwal is a player who puts the team ahead of himself Says Aakash Chopra

Chopra wants Mayank Agarwal, the new Punjab Kings captain, to stamp his dominance in team selection.

“Punjab tends a tendency to change a lot. This time around, the group appears to be in terrific shape. Mayank is a team player who will put the team ahead of himself; he will put his life on the line, but you simply refuse to adapt, whether it’s Anil Bhai (Kumble) or anyone else.”

If Agarwal fails to deliver, he may not have had a long time as captain. Chopra stated.

“Even if the team loses, an odd alteration is acceptable, but I will not make sweeping changes. Mayank’s biggest problem, in my opinion, is to go with the wind, because the Punjab Kings’ history shows that leaders do not remain there for long.”

At the IPL 2022 auction, the Kings put up a strong team. They’ll be hoping that the players stand up and be counted and give them an advantage in their first IPL title.
