Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara has come up with a possible explanation behind veteran IPL batsman Suresh Raina remaining unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction.

Suresh Raina, who is popularly known as Mr IPL, remained unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, which was held at the Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru. Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman Suresh Raina had set INR 2 crore as his base price for the auction and no teams showed interest in acquiring the services of the veteran batsman.

Suresh Raina holds the record of scoring 400+ runs in an IPL season for 9 times and he is the 4th highest run-getter in the history of the tournament.

Overall, he has played 205 Indian Premier League games and has scored 5528 runs at an average of 32.51 and a strike rate of 136.76, including one century and 39 half-centuries

Speaking at the Red Bull Cricket discussion on the Clubhouse app, Sangakkara showered praise on “absolute legend” Raina and revealed a possible reason behind him remaining unsold despite having a big reputation.

 “There are different ways to look at it. As the years go by, players change and reputations are also made new by younger players,” he said, pointing out the example of Suresh Raina.

“In the case of Suresh Raina, his reputation is unbelievable in IPL cricket. He has been an absolute legend, one of the best and top-most performers season after season. When you go into granular detail, perhaps the player is not suited for that season. It takes nothing away from the player being one of the best ever, or the player being of absolute high quality and it is something that analysts, coaches and owners look for,” he added.
