IPL 2022: "Responsibility Means Nothing If You Can't Be The Best Version Of Yourself" - Virat Kohli On Stepping Over As Captain

Virat Kohli, the former captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has spoken out about his intention to step down following the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 campaign.
The 33-year-old acknowledged that his batting was suffering from the effects of his leadership role, so he stepped down.

Kohli announced that he would be going to resign as RCB captain at the end of the season before to the UAE leg of the IPL 2021.
In an interview broadcast on the franchise’s official YouTube channel, the ace batsman explained his decision:
“Whenever you make a choice such as this, a lot of people are saying, ‘You must look at these things from a responsibility perspective.”
“People don’t realize that if you as a player can’t be the finest replica of yourself on the field, then that responsibility means nothing to me as a player. You may still be a team leader and motivate your teammates to achieve success and win trophies and titles.”

Kohli commented on his pleasure in helping the squad, saying, “I take pleasure in delivering to the team.”

“If anything really I sense is dampening my delight and the enjoyment component of anticipating playing cricket and achieving something unique on the field… If anything stands in the way of it, and knowing that you have capable minds to lead the team ahead, I believe it is a wise decision for anyone to carve out some space for themselves.”
Kohli is the IPL’s greatest run-scorer, with 6283 runs scored in 207 games at an average of 37.40 and a strike rate of 129.95.
During the IPL 2022, RCB will be led by renowned South African hitter Faf du Plessis.
