Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara lauded youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal for his determination and commitment towards his game. Jaiswal garnered attention when he became the youngest player to score double hundred in List A cricket at the age of 17 and 292 days.

The prodigious Mumbai batter was the highest run-scorer in the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 with 400 runs in six innings, his scores read 88, 105*, 62, 57*, 29* & 59. Jaiswal’s batting talent earned him an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals as the franchise bought for 2.40 crores in IPL 2020 auction.

In IPL 2020, Jaiswal played just three matches in his first season but went on to score 249 runs from 10 games in the second season and also scored his maiden half-century against Chennai Super Kings in just 21 balls.

Jaiswal was retained by Rajasthan Royals along with skipper Sanju Samson and star England player Jos Buttler during the IPL 2022 player retention period. Sangakkara said that Yashasvi has the urge to learn many things and the team management is working with him.

“I don’t want to single out, but we have some very good young players. They all have the potential,” Sangakkara told Red Bull during the Clubhouse session.

“We saw what Yashasvi can do last season; we are still scratching the surface with him. He’s very exciting and a guy who has tremendous courage and determination growing up. He’s committed and works hard, sometimes too hard. He wants to learn all the time. We are very fortunate to have come across Yashasvi and have him in our squad,” he added.

“When it comes to Riyan, again, what an exciting player! You are talking about strength, power, ability to clear the lines. Good against pace and spin, good against the short ball. He’s a young man, a different personality to Yashashvi Jaiswal. He has more energy and vibrancy in a different way. He’s a guy who’s excited to play and want to do well,” Sangakkara said.

Rajasthan Royals will play their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 29 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune.
