Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Governing Council will virtually meet on Tuesday to give away the letter of intent to the two new franchises.
The two new teams are from Ahmedabad (owned by CVC Capital) and Lucknow (owned by RPSG Group). Both the teams were unofficially inducted into the league with some paperwork pending to complete the official procedure.
Ahmedabad franchise receives a clean chit from BCCI
The franchise owned by CVC Capitals was kept under review for a short period after it was learned that it had ties with a betting firm in the United Kingdom.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had set up an independent panel to review the franchise’s case. The franchise was granted a clean chit by the Indian board on Monday (January 10).
According to some reports, once both the franchisees receive their letter of intent, the IPL Governing Council will soon announce dates for them to sign three players ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Former Mumbai Indians players Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan along with Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, are linked to join the Ahmedabad outfit. Earlier it was learned that Indian opener KL Rahul is likely to join the Lucknow franchise and would lead them in IPL 2022.
According to the reports, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra will be the head coach of the Ahmedabad franchise, Vikram Solanki will be the director of the team and Gary Kirsten will become the mentor.
BCCI aiming to hold IPL 2022 in India
After staging the finals of the last two editions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the BCCI is very keen to hold the tournament this year in India despite the threat of a third wave of COVID-19 likely to come. The Indian cricket board is planning to conduct matches in the cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be the backup option.

“The IPL begins only in April. By then, the third wave will come down. And moreover, even the vaccine drive will be on. So the IPL can still be hosted in India. The number of venues alone could vary,” an IPL official stated.
The IPL 2022 mega auction is scheduled to take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The BCCI might also change the venue and move the auction overseas.
