Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has advised Shreyas Iyer of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to be “a little careful” of the match circumstances when facing spins in the IPL 2022.

Shastri believes that if Iyer spends time at the wicket, he will be able to score “huge runs” in the forthcoming games.

Shastri backed Iyer’s spin bowling skills, adding that he is aware of the dangers and will “always be proactive” against slower bowlers. He went on to say that the right-hander only needs to be patient and wait his turn to hit the big strokes.

Ravi Shastri Continued, “Shreyas will always be combative when it comes to spin. He understands that it is also his strength. He’ll hit 3-4 sixes if it works out. But, given the manner he’s come out, I believe he should be more aware of the condition of the game, the scenario, and what the team requires of him as a captain.”

“He should also take his time. He could have easily taken four-five balls and tried that shot after the way he got out in the last two matches. There was no reason to rush. If he accomplishes that, he may be able to score a lot of runs.”

Ravi Shastri also mentioned that correcting his hitting arc could benefit Iyer’s case, saying:

“Shreyas, from what I’ve observed, usually hits straight. The first ball was so near to him that he couldn’t get the elevation and the ball sailed flat to the boundary both times he’s been out in this IPL.”

“He tried for a cross-batted shot the second time, and it lobbed up in the air. So his sixes come off and fly a tremendous distance wherever he hits straighter – mid-on, down the ground, mid-off.”

On Thursday, the MCA Stadium in Pune will host a match between KKR and MI.
