Andre Russell has been in brilliant form for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022 as he has amassed more than 300 runs in the ongoing season at an average of around 40 and a strike rate of more than 180.

With the ball too he has picked up 17 wickets this season, the most for him in a single edition of the tournament.

Despite his great form this season though, KKR have struggled to find the rhythm they would have liked.

But his player of the match performance on Saturday against Sunrisers Hyderabad has kept KKR still in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs.

Andre Russell came out to bat in a tricky situation for KKR yet again as they had lost wickets in clusters. But he and Sam Billings added more than 50 runs and brought KKR’s innings back on track. Billings was dismissed in the penultimate over of the first innings but Russell took full advantage of the last over bowled by Washington Sundar as he scored 20 runs from it which included 3 sixes in the over.

In bowling, he picked up the early wicket of Kane Williamson and gave his side the first breakthrough. In the end overs, he returned to pick the wickets of Washington Sundar and Marco Jansen and the end the match with figures of 4 overs 22 runs and 3 wickets.

In the post-match presentation, Russell said, “When I went out to bat, when they were bowling into the wicket, it was a bit difficult. Our bowling attack pulled them back tonight. The mindset is very clear, I practice to go and do that from ball one. The first ball in the nets, I hit for sixes. I get my body ready for any situation, sometimes it might be tough. You have to tough it out at times and stay till the back end, happy tonight.”

“Before the last over was bowled, I said, “Sunil, let me start the over with the spinner.” Offspinner to a right-hander, it’s like a kid in the candy shop. I got full tosses and I put them away. Hard work paid off today. Good to contribute in both aspects tonight. I’m just going to keep it going, hopefully, we can qualify”, he further added.

KKR need to win their last game at any cost to have any chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
