Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said CSK batters will have to take the responsibility to score runs in their upcoming matches. CSK lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2022 opener by six wickets in a low-scoring game.

CSK could manage to post 131/5 after wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni blazed 50 off 38 balls in a 70-run partnership with new skipper Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja kept rotating the strike to Dhoni and just hit one six on the final ball of the innings.

CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Devon Conway (3) were dismissed by KKR pacer Umesh Yadav in the early overs.  Robin Uthappa displayed intent in his 21-ball 28 (two fours and two sixes) before he was stumped out by Varun Chakravarthy. Chopra said if Dhoni has to come to CSK’s rescue then there needs to be a change in the team’s approach.

“Mahendra Singh Dhoni did score runs for Chennai. But if Dhoni has to score runs, it means there is an issue. If you look at the batting order, they have Devon Conway, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube. These players will need to score runs.

“Even Ravindra Jadeja looked out of sorts in the last match. So CSK do have a few issues to deal with. The good news for them is that all-rounder Moeen Ali is now available,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra also noted that the four-time IPL champions are missing pace bowler Deepak Chahar‘s services with the new ball. The cricketer-turned-commentator also pointed out how CSK are good in comebacks.

“We always underrate CSK and then they do wonders. After the disaster of 2020, 2021 was the comeback of all times. But this season hasn’t begun well for them. CSK are already missing Deepak Chahar. The ability to take wickets with the new ball is missing,” he said.

CSK will play against Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday (March 31) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
