Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni etched his name in the record books of the Indian Premier League (IPL) during their match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Thursday at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
MS Dhoni, who made 50 off 38 balls against KKR in the IPL 2022 opener, flat-batted Avesh Khan’s short ball for a six over extra cover on the first ball of the 19th over. Dhoni hit 16 runs in six balls including a couple of fours and a six to take CSK’s score to 210/7.
MS Dhoni equals AB de Villiers’ record in this category
It was Dhoni’s 36th six in the 19th over in IPL and the 40-year-old equalised former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter AB de Villiers’ tally of hitting 36 sixes in the penultimate over of the cash-rich league. Dhoni can surpass the former South Africa skipper in this feat given that the latter announced his retirement from all formats of the game in November 2021.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Andre Russell (26) and Mumbai Indians all-rounder Kieron Pollard (24) are placed third and fourth in the list of scoring most sixes in the 19th over of IPL.
MS Dhoni is the fourth player with the most sixes in IPL overall
Dhoni took his overall tally of sixes to 221 in 195 IPL innings, the former CSK skipper is fourth on the list of most sixes smashed by a batter in IPL. Dhoni is behind Rohit Sharma (229), AB de Villiers (251) and Chris Gayle (357) to score most maximums in India’s premium T20 competition.
Ahead of the IPL 2022, Dhoni relinquished CSK’s captaincy duties after leading the franchise in 213 matches in 12 seasons and passed the captain’s armband to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Under Dhoni’s astounding leadership, the franchise appeared in nine IPL finals and won the title on four occasions (2010, 2011, 2018 & 2021).
CSK lost their second match of IPL 2022 to LSG after the KL Rahul-led side chased 211 with three balls to spare to script the sixth-highest chase in IPL.
