When Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals in the penultimate league game of IPL 2022, Royal Challengers Bangalore qualified for the playoffs for the third time in a row.

After qualifying for the playoffs the previous two years, RCB lost the Eliminator and was eliminated. Given how they entered in the last four, there was speculation around the team that they might just be able to go the distance this time.

But they were only discussions; the real game takes place on the field. When the Eliminator started, the question was, “Can RCB do it this time?” They have certainly gone one step up as they won the Eliminator by 14 runs. The star for them was Rajat Patidar who scored a brilliant 112 runs. Faf du Plessis was beaming with smile after the game.

They didn’t get off to a good start; Faf du Plessis was out for a golden duck after being put in to bat first. Virat Kohli just scored 24 runs. Only 9 runs were scored by Glenn Maxwell.

It appeared that RCB’s tournament would be cut short once again. Rajat Patidar had other ideas. Patidar got the fastest century by an uncapped player in the history of the tournament. He hit his century in 49 balls and finished the innings with a score of 112 off 54 balls. In the end, he was ably supported by Dinesh Karthik, who hit 37 off 23 balls. RCB scored 207 runs in the first innings.

Lucknow Super Giants did not start well either as Quinton de Kock got out early. KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda kept LSG in the chase but once Hooda got out for 45 off 26 balls LSG tried their best but they were always behind the game.

KL Rahul scored 79 off 58 but it wasn’t the best of innings in a big chase. Harshal Patel was the star in the slog overs as he went for inly 25 runs in his 4 overs.

In the end it was too much for LSG as they lost the game.

Faf du Plessis after the game said, “Today was a special day. I am over the moon with the way Rajat played. In a match like today, it’s a bit more pressure. The way he played and celebrated his hundred, tells me that he’s got a good head on his shoulder. I thought our bowlers were clear and calm. Rajat has got all the shots and the way he attacks… Every time we are under a little bit of pressure, the way he comes and attacks. It is important to use the occasion and celebrate for the hard work we have done today. The most important thing was we were high on emotion and were very happy. I felt that we were very high and we come down to keep clarity and be calm for the game.”

(Conversations with Harshal) He is the joker in the pack, isn’t he? He is a high-pressure time bowler and every single time I am under pressure I can go to him. He told me that I want the pressure over, which was one of my first conversations with him,” he added.

Faf du Plessis will hope that RCB can play the final on the 29th May.
