Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2021 defending champions, also lost their opening fixture like Lucknow Super Giants, against Kolkata Knight Riders. Former skipper MS Dhoni and the new captain, Ravindra Jadeja, proceeded to stitch an unbeaten 70-run partnership for the 6th wicket to bail CSK out of trouble. MS Dhoni scored his first fifty in nearly three years. CSK managed to put up 132 runs on the board but it was nowhere near enough for their bowlers to defend.

As Faf du Plessis has joined RCB, CSK has added Devon Conway to their squad. In terms of attitude, the Kiwi opener resembles Faf du Plessis. Devon Conway will play his first IPL season this year. CSK bought him during IPL 2022 auction for Rs. 2 crores. He scored only 3 off 8 balls against KKR before being dismissed by Umesh Yadav, who also accounted for his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad.

MS Dhoni played a phenomenal knock of 50 from 38 balls that powered CSK to a decent score of 131 in the first innings against KKR in the ongoing IPL 2022, and he was involved in a 70-run stand with skipper Ravindra Jadeja.

MS Dhoni has struggled with the bat, scoring a combined total of 314 runs from 30 matches in the last two editions-IPL 2020 and IPL 2021. If his tally of 200 runs in IPL 2020 was disappointing, the following year was even worse as MS Dhoni aggregated only 114 runs.

Rajvardhan Hangargekar might be another pacer for the team in the opening game. Rajvardhan Hangargekar showed an impressive performance for India in U-19 World Cup 2022 a few months back. In the absence of Deepak Chahar, CSK might give an opportunity to Rajvardhan Hangargekar in the match against Lucknow in place of Shivam Dube, who disappointed against KKR.

Dwayne Bravo
