Wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa could achieve a double milestone when Chennai Super Kings lock horns with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday (April 21).

Uthappa started his IPL career with Mumbai Indians in 2008 and the very next year he moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore before he was bought by Pune Warriors in the IPL 2011 mega auction. After the franchise was officially terminated by BCCI in October 2013, Uthappa went to play for KKR and spent the longest part of his IPL period with the two-time IPL champions for a duration of six seasons (2014-19).

The Kerala player was the leading run-scorer in KKR’s victorious IPL 2014 campaign with 660 runs in 16 innings at 44 and a strike rate of 137.78. At that juncture, Uthappa became the second Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar (2010) to bag the ‘Orange Cap’ in IPL.

Uthappa spent a year with Rajasthan Royals but couldn’t find a suitable role in the franchise and hence moved to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2021 auction. With his impressive performance in the knockout stage for CSK, Uthappa was re-purchased by the franchise for his base price of INR 2 crore.

Come to IPL 2022, Uthappa scored 197 runs in six innings after being elevated to open the innings with Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 36-year-old has accumulated 4919 runs in 199 IPL matches, striking at 130.93.

Uthappa is 81 runs shy of accomplishing 5000 IPL runs and if he plays in the upcoming match against MI, he will also complete 200 IPL matches in his notable cricket journey. Uthappa will become the seventh player to play 200 IPL matches.

MS Dhoni (226), Dinesh Karthik (220), Rohit Sharma (219), Virat Kohli (214), Ravindra Jadeja (206) and Suresh Raina (205) have achieved the milestone. Uthappa is also the eighth highest run-scorer in IPL and if he achieves the double-milestone then will join Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suresh Raina to score 5000 IPL runs and play 200 matches in the cash-rich league.
