In the IPL 2022 match between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS), former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar believes Suryakumar Yadav made a tactical error by taking on Kagiso Rabada instead of waiting for Odean Smith’s over (PBKS).

Mumbai’s losing streak in the tournament extended on Wednesday when they were defeated by PBKS by 12 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. With a score of 186 for nine, the five-time winners fell short of their goal of 199.

Suryakumar was hailed by Manjrekar for bringing the team back together. He, on the other hand, thought the right-handed batter’s decision to face Rabada in the 19th over was erroneous. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Sanjay Manjrekar said:

“I believed Suryakumar had made a little blunder. With Rabada bowling and Jaydev Unadkat at the other end, he may have remarked anything along the lines of – Rabada is a tricky one to get away from. Let it be against Odean Smith if I have to keep striking for all six balls. When he took it upon himself to grab that big over off Rabada, the pressure increased.”

The runouts were a “major turning point” in the game: Sanjay Manjrekar

Tilak Varma’s run out earlier in the game, though, was a “huge moment” in the game, according to Manjrekar. Sanjay Manjrekar stated, ”

“Tilak Varma has snatched a crucial time in the game. With the 29-run advantage that Dewald Brevis (49 off 25) provided, it suddenly became extremely doable. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav had a fantastic working relationship.”

“It was there for them to casually meander through, safe in the knowledge that Pollard was nearby. It was a gift to be run out at that point and to make matters worse, Pollard was also run out.”

Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their fifth game in a row on Wednesday, putting them at the bottom of the points chart in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL).
