Former India opener Aakash Chopra has opined that the reason behind Ravindra Jadeja being handed the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy can be that like Shreyas Iyer, he might have also looked for captaincy opportunities in other franchises and hence to keep him in the team MS Dhoni stepped down as captain and handed over the reins to him.

This came after the shocking news of CSK’s singular captain in their whole IPL journey from 2008-2015 and 2018-2021, MS Dhoni, who had led them to four IPL titles till now, stepped down as captain, and in his place, Ravindra Jadeja was named the skipper of the team for the IPL 2022.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in over 200 IPL matches and has a winning average of nearly 60%. He won the IPL titles in 2010,2011, 2018, and 2021. CSK was the first team to win back-to-back IPL championships and apart from that Chennai Super Kings also won a Champions League T20 trophy as well.

For CSK, Whosoever Is The Skipper, MS Dhoni Will Be The One At The Helm: Aakash Chopra On Ravindra Jadeja Become The New Captain

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Thursday, Chopra suggested that Gujarat Titans could have appointed local star Jadeja as their captain if he had left the southern franchise. However, Chopra felt that Jadeja decided to stick with the yellow army and hence was rewarded with the captaincy for being loyal to the franchise.

“Ravindra Jadeja might have thought about leaving CSK, considering that Gujarat Titans might have made him the captain, as he is the local boy,” he said. “But he decided to stick with Chennai. It is going to be very interesting because there are already a lot of new captains. But for CSK, whosoever is the skipper, Dhoni will be the one at the helm,” Chopra said.

While Chopra felt that Jadeja will take time to get used to the captaincy, he said that the presence of MS Dhoni will benefit him.
