IPL 2022 Retention: Revealed - Why SRH Released Rashid Khan

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has released Rashid Khan from their roster as the eight franchises in the IPL announced their retentions ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Rashid is one of the best bowlers in the T20 format but the franchise couldn’t negotiate terms with him. SRH wanted to retain the Afghan spinner as the second retention but Rashid wanted to be the first, thereby bagging a contract of INR 15 crores.

After talks between both parties, neither could be convinced otherwise and they had to break their partnership. SRH was adamant about giving Kane Williamson the 15 cr contract and keeping Rashid for 11 cr, 2 crores more than what he used to earn.

The franchise, however, maintains a good relationship with Rashid and is also looking forward to buying him at the mega auction, granted the new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad, don’t splash an immense amount of money on the 23-year-old.

Here’s what SRH CEO said about Rashid Khan:

It’s a difficult decision but if a player wants to be in the auction because of the price, we definitely respect the decision. We will try and match him in (terms of) the price and see if we can pick him up in the auction.

Rashid will be one of the most sought-after players when the auction begins. He is one of the four bowlers to take 400 wickets and his prowess in the shortest format is known all across the world in different leagues. For SRH, he has taken 93 wickets in 76 wickets at an outstanding economy of 6.33.
