Former India batsman Virender Sehwag has slammed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis following Friday’s Qualifier 2 match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Sehwag contended that skipper Faf mishandled Josh Hazlewood during their seven-wicket defeat.
Sehwag mentioned on Cricbuzz that throughout the second innings, RCB chose to give Josh Hazlewood the second and sixth over against RR. He recommended that since he tends to pick wickets with the new ball, they might have offered him 3 overs right away.
After being invited to bat first, RCB posted a below-par total of 157 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. RR batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler started playing bashing cricket in the powerplay, helping their team get off to a fast start in the run chase.
‘You cannot hold back your wicket-taker like this’: Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag believes du Plessis knows the situation and therefore does not end up making such mistakes on the ground. However, according to Sehwag, he may well have held back Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga in the faith that the match might have gone intense.
Virender Sehwag stated: “Josh Hazlewood bowled the second over before returning immediately in the sixth over, in which he provided the side with a breakthrough. You can’t keep your wicket-taker like this.”
“If I were the skipper, I would have started with Hazlewood and offered him three overs right away since they could only win a match if they dismissed RR’s top-order batsmen.”
“Faf du Plessis’ captaincy was lacking nowadays, as he decided to bring in players like Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga late in the match. He occasionally makes of that kind errors and is a great game reader” Virender Sehwag Added.
RR easily chased down RCB’s target in the 19th over, kudos to Jos Buttler’s superb unbeaten century. He scored 106 runs in the knockout game and was his team’s standout player with the bat.
RR will now encounter the Gujarat Titans in the final on Sunday, May 29.
