Former Indian player Suresh Raina named the potential candidates from Chennai Super Kings’ current squad who can take over the captaincy reins from iconic skipper MS Dhoni.

Dhoni has led CSK in 213 IPL matches since the inception of the lucrative tournament in 2008, he is the only captain who is still leading the Yellow Army whereas other teams have seen many changes in terms of leadership roles.

Dhoni’s success with CSK doesn’t require too much description as they have appeared in nine IPL finals out of 12 seasons they played in the tournament and bagged four titles. Suresh Raina is the only other player to have led the Chennai outfit in six IPL matches during Dhoni’s absence from the team.

Raina, who is the leading run-scorer of the franchise with 5529 runs from 200 IPL games, feels that the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa and Dwayne Bravo could be the front-runners for the captaincy post. Raina also mentioned prolific all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as someone who has good leadership skills.

“Rayudu is there then you have Robin Uthappa then DJ Bravo is there. Jadeja, I think, has a good cricketing brain and has been performing well recently,” Raina said in a Star Sports webinar.

Raina went unsold during the IPL 2022 auction, he will be seen in a new role of a commentator. The 35-year-old was named in the Hindi commentary panel for the upcoming season of the cash-rich league.

In his first season with CSK, although Uthappa played just four games for the eventual champions, he made sure his every contribution was counted. He slammed 63 runs from 44 balls at the strike rate of 143.18, his innings was laced with seven fours and a couple of sixes.

Rayudu amassed 602 runs in IPL 2018, which CSK had won after returning from a two-year ban period. The Hyderabad player has been a vital cog in the team’s batting line-up and can become a floater in the team’s batting line-up.
