Former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL winning captain, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed excitement after being announced as the mentor for the newly-added Lucknow franchise from IPL 2022 onwards.

On Saturday, RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka confirmed the news to Cricbuzz that Gambhir was on board with them as a mentor. “Gautam has an impeccable career record. I respect his cricketing mind and look forward to working with him,” Goenka had said.

Thankful for the opportunity, Gambhir stated that he will be fighting for the “spirit and soul” of Uttar Pradesh. The former left-handed batsman hasn’t worked in a management capacity before but this opportunity could well be the start of something new.

Here’s what Gautam Gambhir wrote on Twitter:

It’s a privilege to be in the contest again. Thanks Dr. Goenka for incl me in #LucknowIPLTeam as its mentor. The fire to win still burns bright inside me, the desire to leave a winner’s legacy still kicks me. I won’t be contesting for a dressing room but for the spirit & soul of UP.

Gambhir’s addition comes after Lucknow roped in former Punjab Kings (PBKS) assistant coach, Andy Flower, as the head coach. Flower’s appointment fueled rumors that KL Rahul was going to be Lucknow’s first signing, now that the 29-year-old Karnataka batsman has parted ways with PBKS.

As per the rules laid down by the BCCI, the two new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad can sign three players (two Indians + one overseas) from the existing pool before heading into the IPL 2022 mega auctions. Rahul is reportedly at the top of Lucknow’s list of players to sign.
