Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) appointed South African player and former CSK opener, Faf du Plessis, as their captain ahead of the IPL 2022 season. Speaking about the Protean, Kohli said that he commands a lot of respect from the dressing room.
Kohli gave up captaincy last year in order to manage his workload. Going into the mega auctions, RCB had to ensure that they find a potential skipper who has prior experience of leading a team. When du Plessis’ name came up in the auction, the franchise went all out for him.
“Getting Faf at the auctions for us, the plan was very clear. We need a leader in the change room who commands a lot of respect. Commands, not demands, because he has been there, done that.”
“He’s a Test captain, that profile comes with a lot of accolades already and we are excited for him to lead RCB. He will do a tremendous job. We get along really well with him, all of us myself, Maxi, Dinesh Karthik, and I think all the guys will enjoy this tournament,” Kohli said in a video released by RCB.
“Here with renewed energy because I’m off a lot of responsibilities” – Virat Kohli
Since stepping down as the RCB captain, Kohli has gone on to give up the captaincy role in all three formats for India. Now, he can only focus on his batting, which has taken quite a hit in the last few months.
“It’s unbelievable IPL has come this far. (I’m here with) renewed energy because I’m off a lot of responsibilities and duties and life is in a very good place. For me, it’s all about going about life with a lot of joy and happiness.”
“My focus is so clear, it’s so precise what I want to do – have a lot of fun and enjoy myself on the field and give myself fully to this team, like I have for many years, without any load,” Kohli added.
