Australian swashbuckling middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell will once again find himself going under the hammer in the upcoming mini IPL 2021 auction.
Maxwell, who was bought for Rs 10.75 Crores, by KXIP during the 2019 auction was released by the KL Rahul-led franchise after he endured yet another horrendous season.
In 13 games, Glenn Maxwell managed a mere 108 runs at an average of 15.42 and the most damning stat was the fact that he was not able to hit the single six throughout the season.
Barring the 2014 season, where he smashed more than 500 runs with four 50+ scores, Maxwell has been colossal disappointing when it comes to the IPL. Barring the 2017 season, the Australian has not been able to score more than 200 runs in a single season following a breakout 2014 edition for KXIP.
Nevertheless, Maxwell still remains a big deal thanks to his performances for Australia and his BBL franchise and he could still find a lot of takers in the upcoming auction.
Here’s a look at 3 teams that could target Glenn Maxwell in the IPL 2021 auction:
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Don’t be surprised if the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore go all out for the Australian swashbuckler Glenn Maxwell.
Maxwell might have flattered to deceive more often than not in the IPL but if he gets his act together and finds the form that he has shown while playing for his country or for his BBL franchise Melbourne Stars then he can solve the longstanding middle-order issues for the Bengaluru-based franchise.
Back in 2018, RCB had shown interest in Glenn Maxwell and had gone up to Rs 6.6 Crore before the bidding went out of their budget. RCB have too many top-order batsmen and the only real middle-order batsman in their set-up is AB de Villiers.
If Maxwell finds his touch, then he and ABD can prove to be a deadly combination at 4 and 5. RCB have three overseas slots to fill and with Rs 35.7 crores in their kitty, they can go all out for the Australian swashbuckler in the IPL 2021 auction.
Chennai Super Kings
The one thing that was a constant theme with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 was the lack of intent displayed by most of their batsmen, especially during a run-chase.
In Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, and MS Dhoni, CSK have too many similar kinds of batsmen, who like to take their time before going gung-ho.
If they rack up the services of Glenn Maxwell, and if Maxwell displays the form that he generally shows in T20s, then he could prove to be a real X-factor, and he and Ravindra Jadeja can become a deadly combination at the death.
CSK has 1 overseas slot left to be filled and with 22.9 Crores in their bank, they could go for the Aussie swashbuckler in the IPL 2021 auction unless he goes out of budget.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals had gone all out for Glenn Maxwell in the last IPL auction before he went out of budget.
With West Indian swashbuckler Shimron Hetmyer blowing hot and cold for a major part of the last season, the addition of Glenn Maxwell could add real firepower to the middle-order. If Maxi gets into his elements, then he could form a lethal death-overs combination with his Melbourne Stars teammate Marcus Stoinis.
Delhi Capitals have just three overseas slots to fill and even though they don’t have a big purse at their disposal, they already have 17 players in their squad and can go all out in the IPL 2021 auction to grab the services of the Australian.
