Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, MS Dhoni after the latter took the responsibility in a tough run chase against Delhi Capitals (DC) and guided his team home. CSK defeated DC by 4 wickets with two balls to spare, which helped them reach the final of the IPL 2021 season.

Needing 13 off the last over bowled by Tom Curran, CSK got off to a poor start when they lost Moeen Ali off the first ball. Dhoni, however, was unperturbed and smacked three boundaries to finish the match off in style. Speaking about the innings on Star Sports, Gavaskar said:

Look at the responsibility. Jadeja has been hitting the ball a fair distance. But he came in, he promoted himself. As a captain, he wanted to be there at the finish.

He wanted to do it. That is amazing. You could argue that this has not been the best of the seasons for him but look when it was needed, he has come out and delivered and delivered in style.

CSK have come back with a bang – Sunil Gavaskar

The 72-year-old Gavaskar further pointed out how well the Chennai team has come back after a terrible IPL 2020 season. It was the only time in IPL history where they failed to qualify for the playoffs. They finished in 7th place last season but have rectified their mistakes and are in the finals for a record 9th time.

This is the franchise before last year every single time. When they did not qualify for the play-offs, that has to be an aberration because look at the way they have come back. CSK have come back with a bang. Look at the emotion, the fans are so heavily invested in this franchise,” Gavaskar mentioned.

With the win, CSK awaits the winner of Qualifier 2. As for DC, they will face the winner of the Eliminator between KKR and RCB, which takes place tonight in Sharjah.
