Delhi Capitals pacer Avesh Khan is delighted to have taken the “dream” wicket of MS Dhoni, when he castled the Chennai Super Kings skipper for a 2-ball duck on Saturday, three years after he was denied the opportunity.

Avesh Khan was picked over senior pacer Umesh Yadav in the absence of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Ishant Sharma, for Delhi’s first game of IPL 2021 against Chennai. His recent form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Madhya Pradesh – 14 wickets in 5 matches – must have prompted new skipper Rishabh Pant to take that call.

The 24-year-old youngster repaid the trust shown in him by dismissing CSK’s two key batters, Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni, both for ducks.

Avesh Khan says that the former India captain’s wicket is his dream wicket after he missed out the same chance 3 years ago – in IPL 2018, the seamer could have got Dhoni out but for the catch being spilt by Colin Munro. Avesh Khan also reveals that the Capitals planned for the CSK captain as he hasn’t played any cricket since the last IPL, so he would be rusty, and they needed to take the advantage of Dhoni’s lack of game-time.

“Three years ago Mahi bhai’s (MS Dhoni) catch was dropped. Mahi bhai’s wicket is my dream wicket, and now three years later I’ve fulfilled that dream and I’m very happy about it,” Avesh Khan said in a video released by the franchise.

“It’s also that he hasn’t played cricket in a while, he hasn’t been playing matches, so our plan was to initially maintain pressure on him, and I got the wicket because of the pressure,” he stated.

I feel the fast bowling attack that we have is the best in the IPL: Avesh Khan

The Indore-born speedster feels that the Capitals have the best fast bowling attack in the tournament. He points out that Kagiso Rabada and Nortje will soon join the team as they missed the first match due to quarantine, and Ishant was not fit. Add to it an experienced pacer in Umesh Yadav which makes a stiff competition for a place in the eleven.

“Yeah, obviously because, Rabada, who won the purple cap last year, when he comes he’ll bring a lot of experience with him for bowling in death bowling. Nortje, who had bowled the fastestr ball in the IPL last year, and Ishant bhai will also come in the who has a lot of expeirence.

“Umesh bbhai is also bowoling well. So the competition in the fast bowling department is very good and I feel the fast bowling attack that we have is the best in the IPL,” Avesh Khan believes.

The Capitals will challenge Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals on Thursday at the Wankhede.
