Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, who retired from cricket after the IPL 2020, said that the Virat Kohli-led team will be heavily reliant on Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell was one of the biggest buys in the IPL 2021 auction, when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) shelled out Rs 14.25 crores for the all-rounder, despite his poor performance for Punjab Kings in the previous IPL 2020 edition.

Maxwell had made just 108 runs in IPL 2020 in UAE, and couldn’t manage to hit a six, leading to the KL Rahul-led side to release him ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. However, contrary to popular belief that Maxwell might not find a buyer for in the auction, he ignited a bidding war which was won by RCB in the end.

RCB Would Be Hoping That Glenn Maxwell Has A Very Good Season: Parthiv Patel

During his appearance on Star Sports Cricket Connected, Parthiv Patel spoke at length about Glenn Maxwell, explaining why the Aussie will be crucial for RCB this season. Patel mentioned the lack of a middle-order batsman leading to RCB relying heavily on the success of the Australia big-hitter.

“You’ll have to keep your fingers crossed about that because Maxwell has been a out and out match-winner for Australia. He hasn’t put the IPL stage on fire since last five years. Everyone would be hoping that he has a good season and then RCB also would be hoping that Glenn Maxwell has a very good season because they don’t have any experienced middle-order batsmen. That’s why they will rely a lot on Glenn Maxwell,” said Parthiv.

Patel also said that RCB will be hoping that Maxwell can justify his hefty price tag with some match-winning performances. The RCB management had said that reason why they went hard for Maxwell in the auction was to ease the pressure of finishing matches on AB de Villiers.

Their squad sees a top-order consisting of Virat Kohli, Finn Allen, Devdutt Padikkal, Mohammed Azharuddeen, and AB de Villiers, while the middle–order is relatively in-experienced with players like Washington Sundar, Rajat Patidar, Suyash Prabhudessai, Sachin Baby, Kona Srikar Bharat.
