Delhi Capitals’ (DC) pacer Avesh Khan has been one of the most notable and impressive performers in the IPL 2021 having picked up 11 wickets so far in 5 matches and is just behind Harshal Patel with 15 scalps in the race for the Purple Cap.

He has picked those wickets at a strike rate of just 9.82 and concede runs at a brilliant economy of 7.61 – Avesh Khan never went wicketless in any of the 5 matches.

Avesh Khan has been part of the IPL since 2017 but could manage only 5 wickets in 9 games till last season. However, he is having his breakthrough season this year and has been backed by the new skipper, Rishabh Pant, and coach Ricky Ponting.

“The captain and coach told me that I will be playing in this IPL from the very first game. I have been able to fulfill their expectations, I am trying to continue my form and help the team win more games,” Avesh Khan told Axar Patel in a video posted on the IPL website.

On Sunday as well, the Madhya Pradesh seamer played a crucial role in Delhi’s win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. Having already bowled terrifically in batting-friendly conditions at the Wankhede, the 24-year-old reaped rewards on the helpful track at Chepauk.

He picked the key wicket of Jonny Bairstow, who threatened to gun down the target before getting dismissed for 38 off 18 balls; Avesh Khan returned broke SRH’s middle-order with wickets of Virat Singh and Vijay Shankar.

While he is 4 wickets behind Harshal Patel and will challenge the RCB seamer for the top spot as the tournament progresses, Avesh Khan is focused more on performing well and winning games for his side.

It is not to forget that the likes of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Anrich Nortje are on the bench – be it fitness or overseas quota, it would be difficult for the Capitals to drop Khan in the form he is.

“The ball was stopping a bit on this Chennai wicket so I was looking to bowl slower balls, I was trying to make him hit towards the longer boundary. I am at the number two position in the list for taking most wickets this season. I am not thinking about the Purple Cap, I am just looking to perform,” he stated.

With a victory on Sunday, Rishabh Pant’s side now has 8 points in 4 matches and climbs to the second spot on the points table. The Chennai and Mumbai legs are done and dusted, and they will move to Ahmedabad to meet Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.
