IPL 2021: If Your batters Are Not Going To Put Runs On The Board, It's Going To Be Difficult To Win Games - MI Skipper Rohit Sharma After Loss To DC

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma said it has been “a little disappointing” for him to see his batsmen struggle this season. The opener lamented the lack of big scores and failure to build partnerships by MI batters following their loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday in Sharjah.

Mumbai put up 129 runs in their innings, which Delhi chased down on the first ball of the last over with 4 wickets in hand. Suryakumar Yadav was MI’s best batsman with 33 runs, while no other batter could cross 20.

Rohit Sharma stressed that they had known the difficulties of batting in Sharjah this season, but his side couldn’t get to a par total. The right-hander himself admitted that he has been unable to score big this season.

“We always knew it was going to be a difficult venue. We watched a lot of games and we do understand that it isn’t the easiest of the grounds to play and get those runs you want. We came prepared, we knew exactly what to expect from the conditions, we spoke of those as to how we need to go about when we bat,” Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.

“We didn’t bat well, we didn’t create those partnerships, we always knew that it wasn’t a 170-180 wicket, we knew 140 is a par score here. We just couldn’t get the partnerships going. If your batters are not going to put runs on the board, it’s going to be difficult to win games consistently. We have struggled with our batting this season, I personally accept that.”

Mumbai have now lost 4 of their 5 matches in the UAE leg and with a poor net run rate they are behind other mid-table teams.

Rohit Sharma opined that his side hasn’t played to their best potential as the batters haven’t been able to adjust well to the conditions in the UAE. With two must-win games to go, he hopes that his team put their best foot forward and remain alive in the competition till the last day.

“But I don’t want to take anything away from the guys, we are preparing very well. We are just not able to execute in the middle, a little disappointing. We just look to play the game we are known to, something’s missing in our game. We are not playing to our potential that we are known for, that is something that is missing in the UAE leg. Hopefully, in the next two games, we can come out and play the way we are known for,” Rohit Sharma concluded.

MI now have 10 points in 12 matches; they are behind Kolkata and Punjab, both of whom have 10 points each, due to poor net run rate. They will take on Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday in Sharjah.
