Former India batsman, Virender Sehwag heaped rich praise on AB de Villiers as the South African once again came to the rescue for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2021 season opener against Mumbai Indians on Friday.

Chasing 160, Virat Kohli’s side slipped to 122/6 from 98/2 and seemed to be crashing out of the game. However, it wasn’t to be. AB de Villiers, who hasn’t played any cricket at the professional level since the last IPL, played a blinder of 48 runs off 27 balls to put his side close to the victory, which they achieved on the last ball.

The right-hander brought the required equation down from 34 runs off 18 balls to 7 runs from the last over by attacking two of the best – Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah – pacers in the world.

Virender Sehwag took to Twitter to lavish praise on the former South Africa captain for his mental toughness and alien cricket skills. The former India opener also reckoned that the IPL logo resembles the batting stance of de Villiers sometimes.

“Will power = De villiers Power. Defeats all power. No wonder the @IPL logo is secretly designed after @ABdeVilliers17. Champion knock,” tweeted Virender Sehwag.

The 42-year-old also applauded Harshal Patel for registering his career-best IPL figures of 5/27 against a strong outfit like Mumbai Indians. The Gujarat pacer got the better of the much-feared finishing trio of Hardik Pandya, Kruna Pandya, and Kieron Pollard – he gave away just 1 run in the last over of Mumbai’s innings.

Virender Sehwag believes that RCB could indeed win the IPL this season as with Patel’s brilliant show with the ball in the death they seem to have covered their biggest weakness. Kohli’s men take on Sunrisers Hyderabad, who eliminated them last season, on Wednesday at the same venue.

“But Patel Bhai ke raaz mein , RCB bowling mazaa aaya. Top spell 5/27. Is saal cup aande , no vaandey,” the 2011 World Cup winner — Virender Sehwag added.
