Chennai Super Kings triggered a middle-order collapse after Jos Buttler’s 49 as they defended 188 on a tricky Wankhede surface in Mumbai to record their second victory in IPL 2021. Chennai Super Kings, who were put to bat first by Rajasthan Royals’ captain Sanju Samson, set 189 to win as none of the batsmen could convert their starts to big scores. Faf Du Plessis top-scored with 33, while Ambati Rayudu and Moeen Ali made vital contributions.

Chennai Super Kings made a relatively slow start before Ruturaj Gaikwad perished in the fourth over, followed by Faf Du Plessis two overs later. Moeen Ali made a promising 26, laced with a boundary and two maximums, but could not carry on and holed out to deep mid-wicket. Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu added 45 off 26 deliveries before throwing it away. The three-time champions managed to put a stiff score following some pyrotechnics from MS Dhoni, Sam Curran, and Dwayne Bravo. Chetan Sakariya dismissed the likes of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu to claim figures of 4-0-36-3.

Jos Buttler and Manan Vohra responded to the tall chase as they began smashing quick runs before the latter and captain Sanju Samson perished. Buttler and all-rounder Shivam Dube restored some stability; however, the England keeper-batsman departed for 49, missing out on a well-deserved half-century. Shivam Dube departed in the final ball of the same over, while David Miller, Riyan Parag, and Chris Morris walked back to the pavilion cheaply in a stunning capitulation.

By the time the Royals were playing the 16th over, the Super Kings’ spinners had killed the game by reducing the opposition to 105/7, as the surface started gripping and clearing the ground even for Rahul Tewatia became challenging. Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali shared five wickets between them to destroy the Royals’ batting line-up. Jadeja, who picked two scalps, took four catches on the field and saved several runs by covering a lot of ground. Following the collapse, Jaydev Unadkat and Tewatia a few boundaries to give their side something to cheer about and the Chennai Super Kings had almost accumulated two points by registering a 45-run win .
