AB de Villiers’ stay at the crease lasted only one ball upon his return in the tournament as Andre Russell castled him with a toe-crushing yorker in the encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday in Abu Dhabi.
In the literal sense, AB de Villiers played down the wrong line to the full-length yorker aimed at him by the big West Indies. The South African missed the ball which hit his front leg to take a deflection and hit the sticks sending him back for a duck.
KKR on top as RCB lose 6
Virat Kohli’s side could never manage to get off with the run-scoring as the KKR bowlers continuously made breakthroughs, starting with the wicket of the skipper who was trapped lbw by Prasidh Krishna in the second over.
Devdutt Padikkal and debutant Srikar Bharat tried to hold the innings before Lockie Ferguson, playing in place of Pat Cummins, dismissed the left-handed opener on the last ball of the powerplay.
Russell got rid of Bharat with a short ball before yorking out AB de Villiers. Varun Chakravarthy, who has made into India’s T20 World Cup squad, snapped a brace – that of Glenn Maxwell and Wanindu Hasaranga, the former being bowled and the latter being given lbw.
At the time of writing, RCB are reeling at 66/6 in 13 overs and staring down a below-par total with not much batting left.
