While the IPL 2021 remains suspended from last week, after an outbreak of covid-19 cases in four different franchises, a Reddit user by the name of Adish Jain has concluded that the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) would be the victorious team.

Adish made simulations using the programming language known as Python and announced that it was Virat Kohli’s side who would win the tournament according to his data.

The simulation with done ball-by-ball entry taking into account all factors like pitches, recent form, match-ups, the record of players as well as teams.

“I made a Python program to simulate an entire season of the IPL (excluding the playoffs) using past data, predictive analysis, and randomization techniques. I mainly wanted to share this because there are some really interesting scenarios in the scorecards or some epic batting collapses, also I think RCB fans will like this one,” he wrote on Reddit.

Speaking to Wisden, Jain explained the process he followed to create the simulator.

“I extracted each player’s past five years’ data for batsmen and bowlers. What kind of runs a batsman scored – singles, doubles, fours or sixes – what kind of runs the bowlers leaked, against what bowling did a batsman thrive, when they scored their runs – powerplay, middle overs or death.

“What mode of dismissal bowlers dismissed batsmen the most with and vice-versa how batsmen got out. This includes detailed data such as frequency of wides or no balls or the average catches taken by a player in a game,” he explained.

RCB to win IPL 2021 according to the simulations

According to this, as revealed, RCB would finish with 22 points at the top of the table followed by Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Punjab Kings.

Continuing the simulations, RCB would then go on to defeat the Capitals in the first Qualifier, while PBKS overcomes CSK in the Eliminator, but losses to DC in the second Qualifier, setting up the final between RCB, who will be playing their fourth IPL final, and DC, who lost in the final last season.

In the all-important final, according to Jain’s simulations, Glenn Maxwell blasted the opposition with the bat, and then also took a couple of wickets to take RCB to its maiden IPL title.

Coming back to reality, before the tournament was halted, RCB was at the third position on the points table, behind table-topper DC and the second-placed CSK.
