On Thursday, Chennai Super Kings became the first time to qualify for the playoffs after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 6 wickets. CSK have now 9 wins in 11 matches and therefore sits at the top of the table. Given how they fared during the last season, this has been a remarkable comeback from the men in yellow.

A lot of credit for that should be given to the opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf Du Plessis. Both have provided blistering starts at the top of the order. It has allowed the batsmen in the middle-order to capitalize on that and score big totals on the board.

In the last game against RR as well, the duo put on a solid 75-run partnership in pursuit of a 134-run total. CSK’s opening partnership allowed them to chased down the score quite comfortably. Ruturaj scored 45 off 38 balls, while Faf du Plessis managed to score 41 off 36 deliveries. Moeen Ali too played another vital cameo of 17 off 17 as CSK chased down the score in 19.4 overs.

As for bowling, Dwayne Bravo continues to provide vital breakthroughs. He returned with figures of 2 for 17 in 4 overs. Josh Hazlewood exhibited his best performance with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 24 runs in 4 overs.

After losing their last game against Bangalore by 7 wickets, Rajasthan Royals’ chances of making it into the playoffs is hanging by a thread. They are currently languishing at second from the bottom of the table with 4 wins in 11 matches. Every game from here is a must-win for them.

Having said that, three wins in three matches might not guarantee them a playoff spot. Rajasthan Royals will try and put on a good performance in the remaining matches. It isn’t going to be easy as they will be playing their next three games against high profile teams such as Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.

The openers, Evin Lewis and Yashavsi Jaiswal are in great touch and that is one big positive for them. Lewis scored 58 off 37 balls in the last game against RCB, while Jaiswal amassed 31. However, the departure of Lewis triggered a collapse and Rajasthan only managed to score 149 runs in 20 overs.

Liam Livingstone’s poor show with the bat is a big worry for them, while the likes of Lomror, Tewatia and Riyan Parag aren’t in great form either. The onus will once again be on Sanju Samson as far as scoring runs the middle overs is concerned.

Chris Morris hasn’t been able to replicate the first-half performances in UAE. He needs to deliver vital performances with both bat and ball if Rajasthan want to make a turnaround from here.
