Royal Challengers Bangalore director of cricket operations Mike Hesson masterminded Glenn Maxwell’s inclusion ahead of IPL 2021. Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will turn out for his fourth IPL franchise this year as the Royal Challengers fetched him for a jaw-dropping price of INR 14.25 crores despite a forgettable outing last year. Mike Hesson stated that Glenn Maxwell fits according to what suited their requirements.

Glenn Maxwell’s price of INR 14.25 crores drew plenty of eyebrows as the Victorian endured a lacklustre edition last year. The right-handed batsman managed only 108 runs in 13 matches at 15.43, keeping a strike rate of 101.89 without hitting a single six. But Maxwell roared back to form in the subsequent home summer, thwarting India’s reputed bowling attack in the ODIs.

Mike Hesson revealed that having looked at Glenn Maxwell for a long time, he fits according to what they require. The former New Zealand coach said that their requirement is of an X-factor and high-impact players. He revealed that the Royal Challengers needed someone to accompany AB De Villiers; hence, Hesson feels that Maxwell brings a two-pronged attack in the middle and death overs. Hesson also understands that on his day, Maxwell could turn the game on its head and is aware of using the 32-year old in a space to optimize his skills.

“We have looked at Glenn Maxwell for a long time. He is a fantastic player. He fits what we require in the middle order for us. We want some X-factor players, high-impact players. We just found through those middle overs is an area where we needed to have another player of that quality with AB de Villiers. To have a two-pronged attack in the middle-overs and potentially at the back end. He brings a huge amount to that area. We know on his day, he can turn the game on his head. We need to use him in a space where we can maximise his skills,” Hesson stated as quoted by India Today.

The 46-year old highlighted they are working with Glenn Maxwell and trying their best to make him understand his role as they are keen to join forces with him. Mike Hesson stated that it’s crucial for Maxwell to fathom his role inside and out and who he would bat with at various stages.

“We have certainly spent some time working on how we can do that. We are really looking forward to working with him and preparing him to be really clear around that role. He already is but just to spend a few days among the people whom he is going to be batting with and just understand that role implicitly. Really important we do that,” he added.
