Punjab Kings (PBKS) continued to perform indifferently for yet another IPL season as they finished in the 6th spot in the IPL 2022 tournament with 7 wins from 14 matches and 14 points and couldn’t make it into the playoffs.

This was the third straight time, PBKS finished 6th in the league stage.

PBKS had splurged quite a bit of money in the IPL 2022 auction on players such as Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, and Odean Smith to domestic talents like Rishi Dhawan, and Vaibhav Arora amongst others.

While many players performed well and PBKs even unearthed some amazing talent, many of the players on whom they had high hopes failed to come good in IPL 2022. Let’s take a look at three players that the PBKS think-tank will need to take a call ahead of the IPL 2023.

Vaibhav Arora was signed by Punjab Kings at the IPL 2022 mega auction for 2 Crores. He bowled decently but his economy rate was more than nine runs per over. PBKS might think about his price tag before retaining him for the next edition of the Indian Premier League.

Odean Smith

Punjab Kings shelled out a whopping 6 crore to sign Odean Smith at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Smith did well in his first match and helped PBKS beat RCB, but the Caribbean all-rounder could not maintain consistency. He played six matches in IPL 2022, scoring 51 runs at an average of 17. With the ball, he leaked 178 runs in 15 overs while picking up six wickets. One option for PBKS is to release him and then buy him back at a lower price.

Shahrukh Khan

On the back of his fiery outing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Tamil Nadu, Shahrukh Khan was bought by the Punjab Kings for a whopping sum of INR 9 Crores during the IPL 2022 mega auction.

After being successful in the domestic tournament, Khan was anticipated to translate his sublime performance in the Indian Premier League as well. Though the 27-years old cricketer showed a glimpse of his heroics, however, he wasn’t consistent enough to please the spectators and experts.

In eight innings of the IPL 2022, Khan could only muscle 117 runs at a poor strike rate of 108.33. Moreover, his average (16.71) isn’t encouraging either which could be a sore spot for PBKS if the batter doesn’t get going in the upcoming season if retained.
