All 10 teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction hope to improve their individual rosters by adding some of the greatest players from across the world. The BCCI announced on Tuesday the final list of 405 players who will be auctioned off during the mini-auction in Kochi on December 23. 132 of the 405 players that have registered for the auction are from outside the country.

Only 87 seats are available among the 10 clubs, which implies that some top players may not be bid upon during the auction.

There are a total of 11 players, such as Bangladesh’s seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and England opener Jason Roy, who have maintained their basic fee at Rs 1.5 crore. In the Rs 1.5 crore category, there are four players each from Australia and England.

Let’s have a look at 5 Overseas players at a 1.5 Crore base price who might go unsold in the Mini Auction:

Dawid Malan has been an essential part of the team ever since he made his T20I debut for England in 2017. He’s played 55 games, with a strikeout percentage of 135.71, and an average of 38.84 runs per game while scoring 1748 runs. These figures are quite astounding.

He has a lot of T20 cricket experience, in fact. Over the course of his whole career, he has participated in 290 games in this style, scoring 7895 runs at a strike rate of just under 130. Malan has not drawn many IPL clubs, though, in part because of the lack of flare in his hitting.

The 35-year-old, who has set his base price at 1.5 Crores may find it difficult once again to have any buyer in the 2023 IPL Mini-auction.

Sean Abbott

Australian pacer Sean Abbott has been competing for a while. However, he hasn’t been able to distinguish himself among the national teams.

He has only played in three IPL games so far—two in 2015 and one in 2022—and he hasn’t played magnificently in any of them. Abbott’s only accomplishment is one wicket, which he took for a strike rate of 11.56 and an average of 104.

The 30-year-old has an impressive T20 cricket track record. In 116 games, he’s taken 142 wickets at an average of 21.96 and an economy rate of 8.61. However, considering the dearth of available places, it is unlikely that IPL clubs will make an effort to employ Abbott’s abilities at a base price of 1.5 Crores.

In the T20 league, Nathan Coulter-Nile has a track record of success. The 35-year-old got 170 wickets at an economy rate of 7.78 while playing in 146 games in the shortest format. The bowling all-rounder has also scored 669 runs at a 132.21 strike rate.

At the 2022 mega auction, Rajasthan Royals selected Coulter-Nile for his base price of INR 2 crore. The bowling all-rounder, however, was only able to play in one game because of an injury that kept him out of the remainder of the competition. The right-arm seamer leaked runs at a startling pace of 16.0 in the one game he participated.

Franchises could be reluctant to put up their paddle for the Australian all-rounder this time around given his ongoing difficulties with injury. The flashy cricketer’s decision to set his base price at INR 1.5 crore in a circumstance when his prospects of finding a buyer are also in doubt may not be the greatest one.

Jhye Richardson

Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson is a respectable bowler. At the IPL 2021 auction, Punjab Kings paid a record Rs 14 Crore to get him.

During the 2021 season, he only played in 3 games and took just 3 wickets at an economy rate of 10.63 runs per over. His performance fell short of the cost.

During the 2022 IPL season, Jhye Richardson opted out of the mega auction. His starting bid for the IPL 2023 auction is Rs 1.5 Crore. However,  Richardson could have trouble finding consumers for the IPL this year as the playing conditions are probably favourable to the batters.

Shane Rutherford

When most of the RCB’s first-choice stars were unable to participate, Sherfane Rutherford filled in for three matches in the IPL 2022. He did not bowl a single over but still managed to score 33 runs in two innings at an average of 16.5 and a strike rate of 66.

Rutherford’s value as a bowler has significantly decreased over the past few years, and he hasn’t improved enough as a batter to warrant inclusion in an IPL starting XI as a specialist batsman. Although the West Indian is only 24 years old and still has lots of space to develop, it seems unlikely that he will be selected as a frontline option for an IPL team.

Rutherford recently participated in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, appearing in a few cameos. However, his recent T20 performances haven’t been strong enough to support the idea that he may make an IPL squad.
